FAMILY FARM Born into the industry, he took over the running of family farm with his wife Dawn in 1971. The size of the farm had grown from the family’s original 43ha (106ac) block to 97ha (239ac) including an adjoining 54ha (133ac) block on Waitomo Valley Rd. At its peak in the mid-1970s, the couple along with two of Bernie’s younger brothers Stuart and Keith, milked 240 cows. In the 1984/85 season they milked 222 cows producing 38,000kgs of butter fat. “We were pretty busy,” says Bernie. “But we never brought anything in. Everything was grown on the farm and all the heifers were grazed on it as well. “We had no outside help.” They also grew grain crops and cut upwards of 40,000 bales a year as contractors. “I think why we got along so well was that between the three of us, we’d each have a weekend off every three weeks,” says Bernie. “We had a system where there was only two milking all the time and the other would do farm jobs or go away for the day. “It was a system that worked well for us.” OTOROHANGA farmer Bernie McDowell, who began farming aged 12, says the most dramatic change he has experienced in the past 60 years has been the introduction of modern machinery such as diggers (above) and tractors (below).
