TE KUITI and Districts Pony Club has received
high praise for its upgraded cross country course
which was showcased for the first time at the club’s
annual autumn one day event last month.
The event, held on March 26 at the Piopio Do-
main and incorporated the Waikato Area Pony
Club Trials attracted 98 entries from throughout
the Waikato, Taranaki and Hawke’s Bay as well
as a strong contingent of local riders.
Riders aged from 8-64 years contested three dis-
ciplines – dressage, show jumping and cross coun-
try. Six local riders trialled for the Waikato team
with all qualifying which club secretary Christine
Mans says was an “excellent” result.
They were: A1 (110cm) Storm Harris (Te Kuiti)
and Dayna Fox (Otorohanga), reserve Jenny Bev-
ege (Te Kuiti); (105cm) Sian Macdonald (Te Kuiti);
and (MT 95cm) Clay Harris and Molly Nelson (Te
Mans says the revamped cross country course
featuring 17 new jumps, is the result of a “signifi-
cant” effort by club and community members.
“It was one of the best cross country courses we
have presented for an ODE in many years and
positive feedback from successful Waikato event-
ing riders has been that the course design was up
to horse trial eventing standard – they were very
impressed. The domain grounds were presented to
a high standard and well decorated thanks to the
many voluntary hours from club and community
members – huge thanks to everyone involved.”
President Anna Nelson is similarly thrilled with
the event’s success.
“There was a large number of riders competing
in the lower levels of 65 and 80cm which hopefully
is a good sign that there will be plenty of competi-
tors and support in the years to come.
“At our next event in spring we will have the
50cm ‘First Start’ competition back in the pro-
gramme so I look forward to seeing lots more com-
binations giving eventing a try in this specifically
Nelson says the ODE went up to a height of
110cm also known as one star [1*] which is the
highest level pony club competitions in New Zea-
land can be held at.
