A lifetime on the land
THE Sanson family has been dairy farming in
the Otorohanga district since arriving by horse
and gig nearly 100 years ago.
In 1918, Samuel Sanson bought a farm on
Puketarata Rd in Kio Kio.
To get there he and his family spent several
days travelling from
Sanson (named after
the family) in Manawa-
tu, sleeping in a tent at
night atop fern cut on
He later acquired
more land on Burr Rd,
an adjoining road to
his original block, giv-
ing him a total of about
He and his wife Isa-
bella had three children
– Nancy, Bennett (Jock)
His grandson Carey,
who will be 81 in January, lives on an 80ac (32ha)
property on Old Te Kuiti Rd, says Samuel spoke
fluent Maori which he learned working with
Maori as a young man.

In 1938, at the age of 70, Samuel was travelling
to Sanson when he was tragically killed in a train
accident in Palmerston North’s town square.
His son Jock took over the Burr Rd end of the
farm in about 1934, the
same year he married
The couple had three
sons – Carey, Robert
and Fred, and two
daughters – Valerie and
“ The main part of
the farm is still owned
by Valerie and her hus-
band Dave Street, and is
now being farmed by
their daughter and son-
in-law Leanne and Ter-
ry Ganley,” says Carey.
The homestead end
of the farm was later run and owned by Samuel’s
son Russell, who had a daughter Robyn. It has
since been sold several times and is now owned
by the Mora family.
The family’s original Kio Kio farm was made
up of unbroken, small amounts of pasture. Most
of the stock was watered from springs dug out by
horse and scoop at the edge of swamps.
