A NAILBITING encounter between two King
Country club rugby title contenders played out in
Waitomo on Saturday.
Defending champions Waitomo hosted top of
the table Waitete in an evenly matched derby that
went down to the wire.
Played on a heavy track at Waitomo Domain,
the home team got off to a fast start when fullback
Dean Church crossed out wide but Waitete kept
the scoreboard ticking with two Rangi Te Whare
penalties to trail 6-4 at halftime.
After the break, Waitete wing Josh Davis
finished off a well worked try to give his side a
10-6 lead in a game where both defences proved
hard to break.
As the game wore on, and both teams made
substitutions, Waitomo gradually gained some
ascendency and took the lead with a converted

Waitomo club captain Mark Pitts-Brown says
Waitete were unable late in the game to take
advantage of the “famous slope” at Waitomo and
the home team hung on to win by four points.
“ They slugged it out for 80 minutes in another
epic encounter with fierce defence being the order
of the day,” he says.
“Some outstanding on-line defence from
Waitete stopped us from scoring on a number of
occasions in what is quickly becoming a classic
derby between two heavyweight teams.
“If these two teams meet again in the up-com-
ing finals series it will be a game not to be missed.”
Pitts-Brown says both captains Garnett Ra-
pana (Waitomo) and Sean Burr (Waitete) were
“outstanding” while James Hemara won the battle
of the centres over Waitete’s Te Waiti Mareikura.
The result sees Waitomo climb one spot into
third with 11 points, behind Taupo Sports on 13
points while Waitete remains on top of the Meads
Cup points table with 14 points.
