THE Waitomo District Council (WDC) has
adopted a draft economic development strategy
to help it guide and achieve the district’s eco-
The strategy states that WDC can contribute
to enhanced economic activity by providing
good quality infrastructure and regulatory ser-
vices, actively promoting business and industry
development and attracting people to the district
by providing appealing and well-serviced public
assets and services.
The strategy states: “By becoming more pre-
pared for the future we can offer reassurance to
the existing community and provide an appealing
factor for potential new residents looking for the
advantages of rural New Zealand”.
Mayor Brian Hanna says now that the strategy
is complete the council can start implementing it.
“Future planning is hugely important in creat-
ing a good economy,” he says.
“It’s something we pay a lot of attention to –
how to make this a more attractive place to live
and do business.
“ This strategy hits a lot of the targets that I’ve
always focused on such as tourism numbers and
creating a more livable community.”
Mr Hanna says there is huge business potential
in the Waitomo district and the strategy is a posi-
WDC adopts strategy
tive step in achieving that potential.
According to the strategy, challenges facing
the local economy include a skills shortage in the
labour market, a projected decline in population,
the net migration of youth, limited telecommu-
nication service in parts of the rural community,
limited housing options in urban communities,
a lack of commercial investment to support the
tourism sector and limited availability of indus-
trial and commercial zoned premises.
The strategy states: “In light of the challenges
facing the district, the launch of a focused eco-
nomic development strategy can be used to create
awareness and stimulate a collective response by
the community and businesses across the district”.
Some of the opportunities to be taken advan-
tage of outlined in the strategy are: low median
house prices and rents compared to the rest of the
country; positive net migration; predicted growth
in international visitor numbers and expendi-
ture;, and a buoyant construction sector scene.
