MAKING WAVES: Former Otorohanga teenager Olivia Morgan has been identified as one
the most promising young rowers in New Zealand. The 16-year-old, the daughter of Henry and
Bridget Morgan, has represented the Waikato Diocesan School for Girls’ rowing team for the
past three years and at the 2015 Maadi Cup regatta helped her school win silver in the Girls
U16 eight, bronze in the Girls U18 eight and gold in the Girls U18 four – the first time Dio had
ever won the event. Morgan’s form has continued this year and after performing well in front of
selectors at the North Island (NI) Secondary School Championships and Maadi Cup regattas,
she was selected to trial for the NI team at Lake Karapiro last month.
Following impressive ERG and seat racing tests she was selected in the NI U18 team where
she trained with the squad for three days before taking on the South Island’s best U18 rowers.
Morgan raced twice in the eight, winning both, and placed third in the pairs. The South Island
scored the most points to win the Menzies Trophy. The NI vs SI U18 regatta is a prime
opportunity for young rowers to impress national selectors. Morgan now lives in Hamilton.
THE Otorohanga Football Club’s men’s A team
battled to a hard fought draw in their top of the
table clash against Claudelands on Saturday.
Played at Galloway Park in Hamilton, both
teams were unbeaten heading into the round 5
clash as they looked to secure top spot on Waikato
Football’s C division table.
Otorohanga had the most chances in the
first half but couldn’t find a way through until
a Claudelands player gave away a penalty for
The penalty was scored, but had to be retaken
as players moved before the ball was kicked.
However, Nicolas San Martin stayed calm and
converted again for Otorohanga to take a 1-0
lead. The second half was hard fought as well
with Claudelands managing to break through
Otorohanga’s defence, to level the scores 1-1.
The rest of the game went end to end, but nei-
ther team could capitalise, finishing in a 1-1 draw.
While the men’s B team had a bye, the women’s
team travelled to Huntly on Sunday looking for
their second win of the season.
Trailing 3-1 at halftime Otorohanga battled
hard in the second 45 but Huntly were too strong
scoring four more goals to win 7-1.
For Otorohanga Kaitlyn Sheary and Laura
Christian played well alongside goal scorer Dei-
This week both Otorohanga men’s teams play
away at Cambridge while the women’s team are
away against Waikato Unicol.
